A horizontal metal-extrusion press for extruding tubes has its extrusion ram 12 carried by a platen 14 coupled to a main piston 20, and a billet piercing mandrel 13 carried by a crosshead 15 connected by means which permit relative radial movement, to a piston 24 working in a cylinder 23 extending into the main piston 20. The latter is coupled to the platen 14 by a multi-part ring 25 which permits relative radial movement. Soft metal or synthetic material inserts 52, 53 are provided between the pressure faces of piston 20 and platen 14 and between piston 24 and cross-head 15. The cross-head 15 slides along guides 16, Fig. 3 (not shown), in the platen 14 and the latter slides along guides on the press bed. A worm-wheel 50 enables the mandrel 13 to be rotated for use when forming non-circular hollow profiles. Transversely extending arms 27 from the crosshead 15 carry mandrel retracting cylinders 28 in which slide pistons 29 connected to the front portion 14a of the platen. The forward stroke of the mandrel is limited by abutments 36 on threaded sleeves 33 which engage abutments 38 on stationary rods 34; the rearward stroke of the mandrel is limited by rods 43 engaging stops 42. The two sleeves 33 are adjustable axially and in unison by worm-wheels 32 and the two rods 43 by worm-wheels 41. The press platen 14 is retractable by cylinders 19a, Fig. 1 (not shown), carried by the main cylinder crossbeam 22. An axially movable billet container 8 and a shears 11 for the extruded product, Fig. 1 (not shown), are also provided.
