926,790. Fertilizers. J. BINNS. March 19, 1962, No. 10349/62. Addition to 919,955. Class 111. The apparatus used on the parent Specification for the composting of municipal waste is modified by (a) omission of the rotary screen situated in advance of the grinding mills; (b) replacement of the single stage vibrator by a double stage vibrating device for screening material leaving the grinding mills. The material separated by each tage is separately treated. In the improved process, partially fermented waste from a fermentation cell (not shown) is deposited in a hopper 1 and thence conveyed by belts 2 and 3, via ferrous metal extractor 4 to bucket conveyer 5 and belt 6, whence, after passing through non-ferrous metal extractor 7, the material is ground in mill 8. The material leaving'the mill arrives at a double stage vibrating screening device 9, comprising two screens 10 and 11, which respectively separate polythene, rubber and like resilient objects of greater than 1 inch mesh, and over-sized compost pieces of greater than # inch mesh. Material from screen 10 is rejected, while material from screen 11 is returned to mill 8 for further grinding. The fine material passing both 10 and 11 is conveyed by belt 12 to a silo (not shown) where fermentation is completed.
