Abstract
A supported metal catalyst, the metal being Ni, Co, Cu, Mn, Pt, Pd, Hg, Cd, Au or Zn, is prepared by forming an aqueous solution of metal ammine carbonate, the latter having at least 2 moles NH3/gm -atom metal, suspending an inert carrier such as kieselguhr in the solution, adjusting the NH3 and CO2 contents of the solution to cause a basic metal carbonate to precipitate on the carrier, calcining the mixture of basic carbonate and carrier to form a supported metal oxide and at least partially reducing the latter to metal. The preparation of nickel catalysts is exemplified but the method may also be used for producing composites containing two or more of Ni, Co, Cu and Zn, e.g. Ni+Co. The catalyst may be stabilized by treatment with CO2 containing controlled quantities of oxygen; it is highly active towards atmospheric oxygen unless so treated or otherwise protected. The ammine carbonate solution may be formed, for example, by dissolving Ni in an aqueous solution containing 6-15 wt. per cent NH3 and 2-10 wt. per cent CO2 in contact with an oxygen containing gas and separating the solution from insoluble materials. The catalysts are used to hydrogenate cotton-seed oil, but are stated to be applicable to the hardening of oils and fats generally.
