Abstract

<PICT:0925036/IV(a)/1> Apparatus for applying adhesive to the tips of the flutes of a single faced corrugated board in the production of double faced corrugated board, comprises a driven applicator roll 2 which rotates in an adhesive, e.g. starch, in a trough 1, a riding roll 4 to hold the board 9 in contact with the roll 2 and a leading roll 5 to steady the board 9 passing therearound and between the rolls 2, 5, the rolls 4, 5 being mounted on a support 10 pivoted about a fulcrum 8 so that the pressure exerted by the roll 4 is unaffected by variations in thickness of the board 9. The rolls 4, 5 and the fulcrum 8 are positioned and the angle A between the board 9 and the horizontal is chosen so that the resultant moment about the fulcrum 8 caused by the tension of the board acting on the rolls 4, 5 is zero whereby the pressure exerted by the roll 4 does not alter due to change in speed of the board 9. Air or hydraulic cylinders 7 apply an adjustable, predetermined force to the support 10 to give the required pressure between the rolls 2, 4. A doctor roll 3 ensures that the roll 2 receives an even coating of adhesive.
