Abstract

917,992. Containers; packaging popcorn. MENNEN, F. C. Feb. 14, 1961 [Feb. 15, 1960], No. 5391/61. Classes 66 and 94(1). A cover which may be peripherally sealed to a container has at least one score in each of its faces enabling a central portion of the cover to be removed by tearing in its plane between the scores without destroying the peripheral seal, there being finger grip means positoned adjacent said scores. An aluminium foil container for packaging and cooking foods comprises a tray portion 10 and a wrinkled sheet of thin aluminium foil 20 sealed to the tray and adapted to stretch to allow for expansion of the contents during cooking. The sheet 20 is protected by a paperboard cover 30 peripherally sealed to the container by crimping 18 and having scores 32, 36 in its upper surface and 52, 54 in its lower surface; cuts 34, 40, 46 define a pair of tabs 48, 50. To remove the central portion 58 of the cover the tab 48 is grasped and pulled upwards to tear away a strip 56. A gap in the score 36 at 38 ensures that the strip 56 and portion 58 remain secured together and are removed as a single unit. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) only a single score is made in each face of the cover. U.S.A. Specifications 2,791,350 and 2,815,833 are referred to.
