Abstract
916,877. Packaging. HESSER-MASCHINENFABRIK A;G., FR. May 17, 1961 [May 30, 1960], No. 17934/61. Class 94(1). A packaging machine has at three separate stations, means for making block bottomed bags in expanded form, means for filling the bags and means for evacuating the bags; the stations being connected by conveying means which conveys the bags in expanded form and also means for closing the evacuated bags. A bag formed from material from a roll 18 folded about a mandrel 1, has a carton blank from a stack 19 folded about it. The apparatus for doing this may be as described in Specification 258,564. The bags and cartons are removed from the mandrels at 3 and stood upright in holders 4 of a wheel 5 which conveys them below a filling unit 6 and then to a position 7. During this latter motion the bags are agitated to settle the contents. At 7 each bag is transferred to a closing wheel 9 which seals the mouth of the bag, except for an air exit opening, during its rotation to convey the bag to a device 10 which transfers it to an evacuating chamber 11 on a rotary drum 12 which may be of the form described in Specification 884,239. The bag, after having been evacuated and sealed, is transferred by means 13 back to the closing wheel 9 where the top of the bag is folded over and the carton closed and sealed and transferred to a delivery table 16 by a conveyer 15. In a modified form of apparatus the chambers 11 are replaced by evacuating tubes which pass through the mouth of the bags. The stations may be arranged along a single conveyer. 916,886. Closing cartons; packaging- machines. AMERICAN CAN CO. April 20, 1960, No. 13884/60. Classes 18 and 94(1). To ensure that flaps 25, 26 do not bulge after filling and closing the carton a crease 35 is pressed into each flap adjacent its hinge line. The carton flaps are closed progressively by members 40, 43, 45 which first fold up the lower flap 26 and open slits 31 (see Fig. 7) and then fold down flap 25 and enter tongues 30 in the slits. A block 50 presses the flaps firmly together and a roller 55, rotatable on its axis 56, having grooves 57 forms the creases 35.
