Abstract
916,818. Check weighing apparatus. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. Aug. 21, 1959 [Aug. 29, 1958], No. 27838/58. Class 143. In a check weighing apparatus, a plurality of articles, such as cans 2, carried in file on a conveyer belt 1 are simultaneously pushed laterally therefrom on to a corresponding plurality of weighing heads W by a battery of rams 5, the articles thus fed to the weighing heads displacing the articles previously fed thereto on to a " rejection " delivery belt 7 from which those articles determined by the weighing heads to be above a desired weight are subsequently guided by means G on to an " acceptance delivery " belt 8. As shown a battery of four weighing heads W surmounted by a common stripper plate are mounted beside the conveyer belt 1 with four rams 5 1 . . . 5 4 mounted on a carriage 12, 13 disposed on the opposite side of the belt, the heads W being spaced so that the first, third, seventh and ninth cans 2 in the row are fed thereto between guides 6 by the rams 5. Lateral guides 4 ensure a single row of cans on the belt 1 at the weighing station, the end faces of the rams 5 serving to augment the guides 4 on the ram side of the belt 1. To ensure that the rams 5 will not operate unless there is a full complement of cans 2 at the weighing station, the carriage 12, 13 is normally latched in its retracted position by two latches 21 each controlled by push rods 24, 24<SP>1</SP> disposed axially of a pair (53, 54) of the four rams and projecting through the end faces thereof to be depressed on contact with a can. One of the push rods, 24, operates, through a spring link, a crank 25 to release the latch 21, while the other push rod 24<SP>1</SP> controls a stop 26 which prevents operation of the crank 25 until pushed out of the way thereof by the presence of can adjacent the associated ram (54). When the latches 21 are tripped the carriage 12, 13 is pulled forward by a spring, acting on a lever 17 linked to the carriage, until a cam follower 19 on the lever abuts a plate cam 11 on a driven cam-shaft 10. As the carriage moves forward, a ramp thereon pivots an arm 38 to cause guide members 33 normally closing the entrances between the guides 6, to swing clear of the cams 2. Simultaneously movement of the lever 17 actuates a switch 30 to release a catch 29 from the path of a stripper plate support lever 28, whereupon the lever 28, under the control of a second plate cam on the shaft 10, is first moved to lower the stripper plate, through rods 27, and thereby permit a weighing operation by each head W on the can at present resting thereon. Subsequently the plate cam moves the lever 28 to restore the stripper plate in time to support the weighed cans ready for their displacement on to the rejection belt 7 by the cans now being fed to the weighing heads by the rams 5. On retraction of the rams by the cam 11, the carriage is again latched back until released by the push rods 24, 24<SP>1</SP>.
