903,869. Copy-milling; copy-turning. NEW BRITAIN MACHINE CO. Sept. 24, 1959 [Sept. 30, 1958; May 29, 1959], No. 32490/59. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A tracer-controlled machine tool, such as a lathe or boring and milling machine, comprises valve means 1020 for controlling at least one reversible rotary air motor M detachably connected to a normally hand-rotatable feed shaft 59 of the machine tool and electric means connecting the tracer and the valve so as to electrically actuate the valve in response to displacement of the tracer. The tracer 1000 is mounted for axial and transverse movement in a housing 1003 adjustable vertically on a bracket 1004 carried by the spindle head C of a boring and milling machine. The tracer has electrical contacts, such as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,372,604, which actuate valves to control two air motors. The motor M is a swash-plate motor connected to the hand crank connection 59 for moving the saddle E. The motor is normally supplied with air through pipes 1022, 1023 to both sides thereof, thus locking the drive. The speed of the motor is controlled by a valve 1028 in the exhaust line 1027, to which one or other of the supply pipes may be connected by the tracer-controlled valve 1020. The motor drives through reduction gearing R and a collet-type clutch 1040 which can be disengaged to enable the motor to be inoperative without the need of removing the motor housing 1033 and mounting plate 1034. In operation, the table F is traversed across the saddle which is controlled by the tracer. Subsequent traverses are then made when the cutter and tracer have been adjusted by vertical increments. A second motor can be fitted to a crank-shaft 83 to control the cross-travel of the table. In a modification, the control valve means are located on the supply, instead of the exhaust, side of the motor. A motor may also be fitted to the crank 96 controlling vertical movement of the spindle head. Or a motor can be fitted to the spindle feed wheel 202 so that the cutter moves to- and-from the work instead of vice versa. The motor and tracer assembly may be regarded as an attachment to convert a machine for automatic copying.
