903,556. Shearing; consolidating scrap. RICHARDS MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 9, 1961, No. 4829/61. Class 83 (4). A double-cutting scrap metal shear comprises a vertical frame structure, an anvil fixed to the frame and including a pair of spaced parallel cutting blades defining an elongated opening therebetween, a reciprocating cross-head above the opening, a pair of cutting blades mounted on the cross-head to coact with the blades on said anvil and power means for reciprocating said cross-head to cause scrap material positioned on said anvil to be consolidated and then sheared on two spaced lines of cleavage. The apparatus comprises a frame 13 mounted on a base consisting of two I-beams 15 and includes two reinforced side members 16, joined at the top by a member 24 which is preferably a casting. The lower ends of the side members 16 are joined by two anvils 40 and 40<SP>1</SP>. Each anvil comprises a horizontal bar 45 which has a downwardly inclined flange 46, and also has a recess 48 to seat a reversible shear blade 49 of rectangular cross-section. One anvil is preferably set slightly below the other as shown in Fig. 7. Secured to the inside faces of the members 16 are guides 50 between which reciprocates a blade carrying a cross-head 55 which has strengthening webs 57 and a bar 60 therebetween. Cutting blades 62 fit in seats formed by the webs 57 and the bar 60. In a preferred construction the cutting blades 49 are held in their seats by bolts 70 which have conical heads 74 and are clamped by nuts 73. The bolts pass through tapered holes 72 in the bars 40 and the reversible blades 49 have double conical holes 71 therein. The upper blades 62 are similarly held by bolts 70 which pass through tapered holes 76 in the cross-head members. Material to be cut is contained in a horizontal hopper leading to the shear and is advanced across the anvils so that the end portion thereof projects beyond the passage 41 by a distance substantially equal to the width of the passage. As the cross-head descends the projecting end portion is sheared off and slides down the inclined flange 46 and the portion over the passage is first compacted and then sheared off and discharged on to a guide plate 42. The crosshead 55 is operated from an hydraulic cylinder assembly 80, 81 by a piston-rod 82. The hydraulic system includes an electric motor 87x driving hydraulic pumps, storage tanks 86 and a solenoid control valve 85. The upper shearing blades may be straight and inclined at an angle to the horizontal or may be of inverted V-formation. In a modification the two anvil blades 49 are at the same height and the upper cutting blades are at different horizontal levels, Fig. 5 (not shown).
