Abstract
Synthetic linear polyamides containing the recurring group <FORM:0901159/IV(a)/1> are made by polymerizing m-aminobenzoyl chloride hydrochloride alone or in admixture with one or more copolymerizable monomers at a temperature of from -20 DEG C. to 60 DEG C. in an organic solvent medium. Specified monomers are the hydrochloride salts of p-aminobenzoyl chloride, the chloroformate ester of 4-hydroxypiperidine and S -aminocaproyl chloride. Specified solvents for the reaction, which also may be used for wet spinning the polyamides into fibres are dimethylacetamide, N-methyl pyrrolidone and hexamethylphosphoramide alone or in admixture with lithium chloride, lithium bromide, calcium chloride or calcium bromide. The polymerization may be effected by the interfacial polymerization technique, the two separate phases being tetrahydrofuran and water. The polyamides of the invention may be blended with minor amounts of chlorotrifluoroethylene polymers or other fibre forming polymers, e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene and polypropylene. The examples are given of the preparation of the polyamide and its conversion to fibres. Specifications 535,141, 543,843, U.S.A.
