Abstract

Refined bismuth is produced from a lead-bismuth alloy in a two-stage process. In the first stage the molten alloy is chlorinated and the dross is removed, in the second stage phosphorus (or a heat decomposable phosphorus compound) is added to the melt and the dross once again removed. Examples of impurities removed are nickel and lead and 99.999% bismuth is stated as being produced.
