In a washing-machine a rotary drive shaft 20 extends through an aperture 19 in the base of a washing tube 12 and is connected to a vertically extending column 34 the upper part of which is centred on the tube axis and the lower portion is disposed eccentrically so that an agitator 31, 33 linked to the column is given a wobbling movement about a plane transverse to said axis when the column is given a gyratory movement by the drive shaft 20. The shaft 20 is connected to an obliquely mounted crank 21 rotatably journalled in bearings 23 and a ball-bearing 25 is interposed between the crank and the agitator support 26 so that rotation of shaft 20 produces a gyratory motion in crank 21 which then imparts the wobbling motion to the agitator support 26. The crank 21 extends to a shaft 35 on which the column 34 is freely journalled by means of sleeve 37, collars 38 and 39 and the column is sealed and anchored to the agitator assembly by a flexible boot 40. The column 34 is inclined to the vertical so that the top of the column is coincident with the axis of rotation of the washing tub and is level with the surface of the wash water. As shown in Fig. 1, the washing machine comprises a fixed tube 11 enclosing a dual walled rotatable wash tub 12 comprising a foraminous inner shell 14 and an imperforate casing 15. A flexible diaphragm 28 seals the casing and prevents relative movement between the tub and the agitator which comprises a flexible flipper 31 mounted between plates 29 and 30 and secured to a base-plate 27 and a flat or moulded flexible disc 33 clamped to the convoluted upper surface of the pedestal 32 and secured to the plate 30.
