Abstract
900,200. Incandescent electric lamps. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 3, 1961 [March 11, 1960(2)],No. 7822/61. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (2). An incandescent lamp has a filament containing a major proportion of tantalum carbide in an atmosphere comprising at operating temperature hydrogen, vaporized carbon and at least two halogens, one of which is bromine or iodine, the atmosphere being substantially free from oxygen. An inert gas of low heat conductivity may also be present. The atmosphere may contain an excess by volume of hydrogen and halogens over carbon vapour and an excess of hydrogen over halogens. The components of the atmosphere may be provided by including suitable sources of the components in the bulb. One at least of the halogens may be provided by including a metal halide such as a halide of rubidium, cobalt, tin, silver, cadmium, aluminium, copper, zinc, mercury, nickel or cerium. In examples: (1) carbon tetrachloride, methyl iodide or bromide or rubidium iodide or bromide; (2) ethylenediamine hydrochloride or methylamine hydrochloride with bromine or iodine or a compound thereof; (3) a hydrocarbon such as ethylene, hydrogen chloride and bromine or iodine or a compound thereof such as ethyl bromide or iodide, hydrogen iodide or cobalt iodide; (4) hydrogen, a hydrocarbon such as ethane, methane or ethylene and a mixture of halogen or halides, e.g. chlorine and iodine or chlorine and rubidium bromide; (5) iodine or bromine or compounds thereof, hydrogen and a halogenated hydrocarbon such as benzene hexachloride, carbon tetrachloride, carbon tetrabromide, tetrachloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, dibromochloromethane, trichlorobromomethane or trichloroiodomethane may be used. The filament may initially be of pure tantalum, being converted to tantalum carbide by passing a current through it in situ to produce a temperature of 3500‹ C. The leading-in wires may be of tantalum or rods of carbon, tungsten, platinum, palladium or rhodium or of metals coated with platinum, palladium or rhodium may be used. The inner surface of the bulb envelope may be protected from attack by a coating of calcium fluoride, e.g. by evaporating this material on to the inner surface. The invention may be applied to headlamps of the sealed beam type.
