Abstract

The invention provides a method of manufacturing a self-supporting stocking (1), in which the stocking is supported with the interior of a welt ring (2) facing radially outwardly of the stocking and rotated about its longitudinal axis while a silicone material is applied onto the welt so as to form a stripe around the welt. The silicone is subsequently cured. The method is carried out in an apparatus which includes a series of stocking support means (25) which can be rotated each with a stocking thereon having the interior of its welt facing outwardly. Means (30) are provided for applying silicone to stockings moved in succession to an application station by indexable turntables (11, 12), the treated stockings being passed through curing ovens (28) for curing the silicone material.
