Abstract

907,611. Explosive compositions. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. July 26, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No. 27057/61. Class 9 (2). A blasting explosive consists of a slurry comprising 70 to 90% by weight of a solid oxidant consisting of 30 to 100% by weight of an inorganic chlorate or perchlorate and 0-70% by weight of ammonium nitrate, from 5 to 20% by weight of a non-explosive liquid fuel and 1 to 10% by weight of water. Preferably sodium chlorate is used, but it may be replaced by potassium chlorate or ammonium perchlorate. The liquid fuels may be methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, kerosene tall oil or fuel oil; coal may be added to bring the oxygen balance to about zero. About 1% of sodium carbonate or hydroxide may be added as stabilizer and an emulsifying agent such as sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate may also be included.
