Abstract
905,881. Cells for electrolysis of melts. CIBA Ltd. July 6, 1961 [July 8, 1960], No. 24554/61. Class 41. A cell for the electrolysis of melts is provided with a device for withdrawing a cathcde from the cell and for removing deposited metal from the cathode without exposure to the atmosphere, after removal from the cell. The upper end of the retracted cathode 20 is lifted into an enclosure 22 wherein the cathode is cooled. As the cathode enters the enclosure a stripping device 28 removes deposited metal, which is collected in a receiver 30, this being racked in and out of position. The assembly above the cell is wholly enclosed, 32, and enveloped in a protective gas environment. In the electrolysis of a fused melt, particularly of refractory metals, it is necessary to isolate the deposited metal, at cell temperature, from atmospheric contamination. A cylindrical diaphragm 18 prevents halogen gas, for example, liberated at the anode from reaching the deposited metal adhering to the cathode. The melt is heated by an electric coil 14 wound round a crucibleshaped anode.
