Classes 34 (2) and 64 (2). [Also in Group XII] Iron oxide filter cake to be dried, sugar to be cooled or other divided material to be heated or cooled is fed from a shoot 7 to form a bed 17 on louvres 13 mounted on radial plates 18 in a rotated drum 12 supported by rollers 3a. The apparatus may be of the form described in Specification 655,014, but in the present case, hot or cold gas or a gas flame is passed into the channels 11 formed by the plates 18 when the channels are at the upper part of their rotational travel and the louvres thus heated or cooled then pass down into contact with the bed 17 as the drum rotates so as to treat the material. In addition to this form of treatment, hot or cold gas may be passed through the bed of material, as it is in the prior Specification referred to. The radial plates 18 decrease in height towards the end having the gas outlet 16 so that the central space enlarges towards that end. As shown, hot air from a fan and heater enters the channels at the top of the apparatus before passing through the drum 12 (to an expansion chamber 5 above a discharge shoot) to a cyclone and an exhaust fan. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the material is fed from the opposite end by a wormfeed and the drum is tilted down to the discharge end. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the drum 12 has a first, heating zone and, axially adjacent to it, a second, cooling zone, there being a hot gas inlet and a cold gas inlet at one end of the drum and from these the gases flow through divisions of the channels formed by partitions between the drum shell and the inner wall of louvres 13 so that the hot gas flows through the inner divisions into the drum interior and the cold gas flows through the outer divisions to the undivided portions of the channels at the other end of the drum and thence into the drum interior. The gaps between the louvre plates 13 may be such as to permit the treated material to flow into the channels.
