Abstract
<PICT:0904945/III/1> A hand-held applying device for use with rod cement comprises an electric motor, rod cement feeding means, a melting passage leading to a nozzle through which molten cement may be extruded, actuating means, and a valve at the nozzle, the device being so arranged that when it is in a ready-for-use condition the valve is in a closed condition and the feeding means does not operate to feed the rod cement, when the actuating means is operated the motor operates the feeding means to feed rod cement into the melting passage and the valve is allowed to open, and when the actuating means is released to return the device to its ready-for-use condition the feeding device ceases to feed rod cement, and the valve closes, so that no further cement extrudes through the nozzle. As shown, the device comprises a body portion 2, handle 4 with a trigger 8, a barrel 6 having electrical heating means, a melting passage 16 and a nozzle 7, and an electric motor 10. Rod cement 12 of generally circular cross-section but having two diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves is fed into the barrel 6, the unmelted rod acting as a piston to force molten cement through the nozzle 7. The feed means comprises the electric motor 10, controlled by a switch 86 which is operated by the trigger 8, the motor 10 driving a feed-wheel 36 through a gear train and slipping clutch assembly. The feed-wheel 36 and a springurged counter-pressure roll 40 engage the rod 12 through apertures in the guide tube 34, and urge it into the tube 14 of the barrel 6, which is surrounded by an electrical hearing element 18. The outlet from the tube 14 into the nozzle 7 is controlled by a valve V, comprising a member 26 which in the ready-for-use condition is urged to engage a seating 25 by a spring 92 acting of a loose block 90 surrounding the guide 34; the block 90 acts on a hook 94 at the end of a wire 96 extending from the member 26. The block 90 is also provided with two pins 91 which engage in recesses 89 in a forked extension of the trigger 8, which is pivoted at 60, so that when the trigger is pressed, the pressure of the spring 92 on the valve V is removed, at the same time as the motor 10 is caused to feed the rod.
