Abstract
In an exothermic device for heating foodstuffs, defrosting, sterilization &c., in which the heat is generated by chemical interaction between the constituents of an autogenous metal oxide mixture in a container, the said mixture is treated by pressure and/or temperature so as to have a density of at least 2,7 grams per cubic centimetre and a compressive strength of about 2000 pounds per square inch. In various methods mentioned for preparing the mixture, pressures of between 5000 and 40000 lbs. per square inch, and temperatures ranging from 400 to 2000 degrees F. are mentioned. All air is removed from the mass either before or after compression and when finally encased in a sealed cartridge the mixture is, before ignition, preferably under subatmospheric internal pressure and/or in the presence of oxygen. The compacted charge in the container may be ignited either chemically or electrically.
