Abstract

An elastomeric, halogenated polyethylene is prepared by dissolving polyethylene in an inert aromatic diluent and introducing a chlorinating or brominating agent at a temperature of 60 DEG -170 DEG C. to produce a halogenated polyethylene containing 25 to 65% of halogen and having sufficient unsaturation to be cured by sulphur, e.g. 0,3 to 6,0 mole per cent unsaturation. Halogenation may be effected with chlorine, bromine, N-bromo succinimide or dichlorodimethyl hydantoin, optionally in the presence of U.V. light. The product may be cured through the unsaturation and/or through the halogen atoms and curing agents specified are sulphur\sBzinc oxide; the oxides, sulphides, nitrates, phosphates, sulphates and organic acid salts of Zn, Cd, Mn, Fe and Pb; the metals of IIa and IIb of the Periodic Table; amines and polyamines; organic peroxides; dimethylol resins; and quinone dioxime\sBred lead. Specified rubber accelerators also may be present. The halogenated products may be compounded with fillers such as carbon black, silica and mica; with antioxidants such as amines and phenols; and with coal tar oil, pine tar oil or petroleum oil. Applications specified are motor mounts, hoses and gaskets. The examples also illustrate the production and purification of low pressure polyethylene using Ziegler type catalysts.
