Abstract

The invention comprises 4-quinazolones having one of the tautomeric formulae <FORM:0899362/IV (b)/1> <FORM:0899362/IV (b)/2> <FORM:0899362/IV (b)/3> and alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts thereof, wherein R1 is hydrogen, halogen, e.g. Cl, Br, F, C1-5 alkyl or alkoxy or a nitro or amino group, R1 is hydrogen or a C1-5 alkyl radical, R3 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1-11 carbon atoms or a molecular aryl or a mononuclear aryl substituted C1-3 alkyl radical; and their preparation by (a) heating a sulphamoyl N-acyl-anthranilic amide, (b) heating a sulphamoyl anthranilic amide with formic acid or ethyl formate, or (c) heating a sulphamoyl anthranilic acid with formamide. The anthranilic acid and amide derivatives used as starting materials are made by the processes of Specification 898,782. Pharmaceutical preparations having diuretic and natriuretic activity comprise the above 4-quinazalones together with an inert, non-toxic diluent, suitably in the form of tablets, pills or capsules for oral administration or in solution in a dilute alkali or polyethylene glycol to provide injectable solutions for parenteral administration. Tablets comprising 7 - chloro - 6 - sulphamoyl - 4-quinazolone, starch and magnesium stearate are described.
