Abstract

The formation of slime due to algae, bacteria and fungi on surfaces in contact with aqueous liquids, for example, the wooden surfaces of cooling towers, is prevented by adding to the liquid from 3-50 p.p.m., calculated as PO4, of a molecularly dehydrated polyphosphate and from 0.1 to 5 p.p.m. of a surface-active material selected from the group consisting of polyoxyalkylene glycols, polyoxyalkylene-polyamine condensation products and ethers of polyoxyalkylene glycols, the polyoxyalklyene groups in each instance including both ethoxy and propoxy groups. Alkali metal phosphates such as sodium tetra-, septa-, and decaphosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and hexametaphosphate are preferred. Alternatively, polymetallic glassy phosphates such as sodium-zinc polyphosphate may be used. The above composition also acts as a corrosion inhibitor and to prevent inorganic scale formation on metal surfaces. Specification 731,603 is referred to.
