Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula YCOR-Ar(Z)nX where Ar is an aryl nucleus, Z is OH, Hlg, Alk or OAlk, n is 0 or 1-4, R is alkylene, Y is o- or p-dihydroxyphenyl or alkyl or halogen substituted derivatives thereof and X is an amino group. The compounds are made by treating a dihydroxy protected derivative of a dihydroxyphenyl ketone, in the presence of an alkaline condensation agent, with a nitroaryl aldehyde and catalytically hydrogenating the condensation product to saturate the double bond and reduce the nitro group and liberating the hydroxy groups. Specified products are 2[gamma - (21,51 - dimethoxy - 31 -aminophenyl) - propionyl] - and [gamma - (41 - aminophenyl) - beta - methyl - propionyl] - and 6 - methyl - and -chloro- and 3,6-dimethyl-2-[gamma-(21,51-dimethoxy - 31 - aminophenyl) - beta - methyl - propionyl]-hydroquinones. The compounds are used as and in the preparation of, photographic dye developers, see Specification 898,706, and in diffusion-transfer reversal photographic processes, see Specification 684,592. In an example the starting ketone is 2,5-dibenzyloxy-acetophenone.
