Abstract
898,499. Dyeing or printing nitrogenous fibres. CIBA Ltd. April 23, 1959 [April 30, 1958], No. 13931/59. Class 15 (2). Nitrogenous fibres such as wool, silk and polyamide fibres are dyed or printed from an aqueous bath containing a 1 : 2-chromium or cobalt complex of an azo dyestuff, the complex containing at least two acid solubilising groups, together with a compound containing at least one basic nitrogen atom to which is bound at least one residue containing a polyglycol ether chain, the compound containing at least three groups, at least two of which are members of said chain, and at least 4 carbon atoms not belonging to such groups. Suitable nitrogenous compounds are the reaction products of at least 3 molecular proportions of an α : #-alkylene oxide with one molecular proportion of an organic compound containing at least one basic primary or secondary amino group, or a basic tertiary amino group and an alcoholic hydroxyl group, or salts or quaternary ammonium salts of these compounds, those of the formula Wherein R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of at least 12 carbon atoms, m and n being 1 or 2 and p, q and r being whole numbers such that p+q+(m-1(n-1) is at least 3, or of the formula wherein R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of at least 12 carbon atoms and p and q are whole numbers such that p+q is at least 3 and advantageously 8-20, being particularly suitable. Esters of the above compounds with polybasic acids such as phosphoric or sulphuric acid may also be employed, as also may their water-soluble salts. Dyeing is preferably effected in an acid to neutral bath at a raised temperature. Printing, particularly of worsted tops by the slubbing method, may be effected with an aqueous paste containing also, if desired, a thickener such as tragacanth or British gum, an acid such as acetic acid, turpentine, hydrotropic substances such as urea and agents preventing reduction such as sodium nitrobenzene-sulphonate, the prints being finally steamed. Numerous examples are given. Specification 777,389 is referred to.
