Abstract
A cement composition for applying as thin coatings to wood, compressed cork granule panels, foamed glass or plastic blocks, comprises magnesium chloride and magnesium oxide in the weight ratio MgCl2/MgO of at least 0,372 inert absorbent fillers, such as asbestos, sawdust or wood flour, and hydrophilic colloid selected from the following:- water-soluble carboxymethyl-celluloses or alkali metal salts thereof, polyvinyl ether-ammonium maleamate copolymers, e.g. methyl vinyl ether copolymer, locust beam gum, amylopectin, gum arabic or tragacanth, methylcelluloses or alkali metal salts thereof, hydroxyethylcelluloses, polyacrylamides or a calcium salt of a maleic anhydride copolymer. For example, to a dry mix containing by weight 25 to 30% magnesia, 47 to 51% of -48+200 mesh quartz sand, 20 to 22% of -100 mesh silica flour and 3% asbestos (chrysotile) fibre, was added 0,01 to 1,5% by weight of dry mix of a hydrophilic colloid (e.g. Na carboxymethyl-cellulose) prior to gauging with a 25 degree Baum\'e MgCl2 solution.
