Abstract
897,878. Discharging from aircraft. SVENSKA AEROPLAN A.B. March 31, 1959 [April 3, 1958], No. 10801/59. Class 9(2). A streamlined rocket housing to be suspended from aircraft comprises a cylindrical part 3 closed fore-and-aft by fairings 6, 7 respectively, made of a brittle material, e.g. synthetic resin, and provided with explosive means for shattering the fairings prior to launching of the rockets 5. The explosive is in the form of cords 8 joined to electric detonators 9 connected to an electric firing circuit by leads 10. The housing is releasably suspended from the aircraft, so that it can be jettisoned after launching of the rockets. The fairings 6, 7 may be made of laminated synthetic resin reinforced by fibre glass and the explosive cords can then be embedded in the walls. The nose cap 6 and rear closure 7 may be so weakened that fracture takes place longitudinally and transversely of the structures. Between two sets of layers 19, 20, Fig. 6, a perforated sheet 21 of viscose cellulose or waxed paper is sandwiched, the two layers being bonded together only over an area determined by the holes. Instead of a perforated sheet, spaced strips may be used or the layers may be bonded by suitably impregnating parts of the juxtaposed surfaces. Explosive cords may also be placed circumferentially of the housing and the whole housing may be shattered. The shattering may take place in stages.
