Abstract
896,801. Batteries. ELECTRIC STORAGE BATTERY CO. Sept. 25, 1958, No. 30639/58. Class 53. An alkaline accumulator comprises electrodes 11b, 12b with separators 13b, and conductive plates 14a between the cells, the whole being enclosed in a container 21 which is cast in situ to exclude air and form a gas and liquid-tight enclosure. The elements may be impregnated with electrolyte, for example caustic potash, before the container is formed or it may be introduced through holes made in the container and which are subsequently plugged. The electrodes may consist of sintered zinc oxide and silver powder sintered on to silver plates which may form the plates 14a which connect the cells in series. Mercury for amalgamation may be applied to the surfaces of the plates 14a. Each separator consists of two or more members, three being shown in Fig. 1. The centre member consists of a porous carrier having an ionexchange resin in its pores. The carrier may consist of asbestos, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. On each side of the central member is a porous compressible sheet, e.g. polyethylene. The container is cast round the elements of the battery while they are under compression, and is made of a resin that shrinks on polymerization, for example an epoxy polyamide resin, polyethylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride.
