Abstract

883,975. Tubular heat exchangers; heating by circulation of hot gases. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. Oct. 23, 1959 [Oct. 24, 1958], No. 35917/59. Classes 64(2) and 64(3) In a heat exchanger for heating oil and like hydrocarbons, longitudinally finned tubes 26 extend within a casing 31 and a heating gas is caused to flow through the casing and over the tubes. The gas flows under pressure maintained by a blower in a continuous circuit which includes a combustion chamber (not shown) supplying additional heating gas to the circuit to replace the small quantity of cooled gas continuously removed from the circuit upstream of the combustion chamber. A longitudinal baffle 34 extends centrally between the tubes and is supported on a bracket 35 welded to one of the tubes. Relative expansion between the tubes and the casing is permitted by a seal comprising a cover plate 27 carried at one end of the tube assembly and freely slidable in a stuffing box 30. Inlet and outlet headers 24, 38 are secured to the tube ends and the fluid to be heated flows through the tubes in a contra flow direction with respect to the heating gas flowing over the tubes. The tubes may extend either vertically (as shown) or horizontally. A single combustion chamber may be connected into several heater circuits.
