Abstract

Cyanic acid and cyanogen are produced by oxidizing hydrogen cyanide with oxygen, e.g. in the form of air, in the presence of a catalyst comprising gold. Oxidation may be effected at a temperature of 300 DEG -700 DEG C., preferably 500 DEG -600 DEG C. The reaction mixture may be preheated. The catalyst may be preheated, e.g. electrically. An excess of hydrogen cyanide is preferably employed. The catalyst may comprise one or more gauze or porous elements coated with finely divided gold. The catalyst may also comprise copper and/or silver. The gaseous reaction product may be cooled by increasing its velocity and further cooled by the injection of a cool gas or liquid. Ethyl alcohol may be injected, thereby forming urethane and/or ethyl allophanate. An example is given. Specification 883,110 is referred to.ALSO:Urethane and ethyl allophanate are produced by injecting ethyl alcohol into gaseous cyanic acid produced, together with cyanogen, by the oxidation of hydrogen cyanide in the presence of gold (see Group III). Specification 883,110 is referred to.
