882,909. Smelting iron ores. ONTARIO RESEARCH FOUNDATION. May 16, 1958 [May 16, 1957], No. 15879/58. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] A method of treating iron ore, particularly magnetite ores, to produce iron comprises burning a fuel in an oxygen-containing gas to form an oxydising flame, this being directed downwards to impinge on the surface of a bath, introducing a mixture of finely-divided iron ore and flux into the flame from the burning fuel to be rapidly heated, and enveloping the flame and mixture with a reducing agent and reduce the iron oxide to metallic iron. The gaseous constituents from the iron and slag are separated by impinging the reaction products upon the surface of the bath. In the Figure a reducing chamber 11 is provided with passages 25 to allow exhaust of gases from the chamber 11, dust particles in the gas are separated out in headers 27. Natural gas enters through inlets 44 and 50, and oxygen or air through an inlet 51. A partition 45 contains a central burner orifice 48. A receptacle 13 is provided with a cavity 14 for molten iron and slag. The magnetite ore is mixed with a flux, preferably lime. The temperature of the bath in the cavity 14 is preferably maintained at 2800‹F. to 3000‹F. A portion of the molten iron may be drawn off from the bath, have carbon or coke added, and be returned by way of a passage 60. The natural gas may be replaced by other fuels.
