Abstract
882,458. Moulding refrigerator cabinets. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 18, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959], No. 28649/60. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XIII] A refrigerator cabinet is formed by coating the outer and inner surfaces of male and female moulds 149, 151 with successive layers of congealable resin and fibrous material to form the inner and outer shells 194, 190, juxtaposing the two moulds so that the shells are nested, and foaming a foam-forming resin 199 in situ between the moulds to adhere to the shells, the moulds being then removed. The layers may be sprayed, brushed or rolled on to the moulds. The inner shell 194 has a peripheral flange secured to the front edge of the outer shell and forming the front face of the cabinet. Shelf supporting ribs are formed on the inner shell by appropriate protuberances on the mould 149. A formation for receiving a lamp 62 is similarly formed. Various reinforcements 42, 84, 86 are secured to the shells before foaming. The foamforming resin may be an epoxy resin or a polyurethane, the included gas being one or a mixture of various halogenated saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons quoted in the Specification. The fibrous material may be glass, sisal or textile. The congealable resin, which may be translucent or coloured by pigments, may be of polyester, epoxy, phenolformaldehyde or vynil type or nitrocellulose. It may be loaded with aluminium or other metal in powder or flake form.
