Abstract

888,436. Catches. CARTER, A. G. Feb. 14, 1958, No. 4914/58. Class 44. A safety-belt buckle comprises two components 20, 25, Figs. 2 and 3, locked in engagement by a spring-loaded cam member 36 which can be rotated by a lever 43 to permit disengagement of the components, the cam member 36 being rotated without corresponding movement of the lever 43 during reengagement of the components. The component 20 is provided with a slot 21 for receiving a loop of a belt 22 and with apertures 23, 24 which engage projections 29, 30 on the base 26 of the component 25, the apertures and projections having engaging surfaces 31, 32 forming an acute angle with a normal to the base 26, which angle has critical limits between 15 degrees and 30 degrees depending upon the surface finish. Alternatively the apertures may be on the component 25 and the projections on the component 20. The cam member 36 and the lever 43 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 34 non-rotatably disposed between flanges 27, 28 of the component 25, and a torsion spring 44 biases the cam member 36 to the locking position, one end 45 of the spring 44 engaging the cam member and the other end 46 engaging a lug 47 on a collar 48 also rotatably mounted on the shaft 34 and having another lug 49 which is engaged by a relatively stronger torsion spring 50 to urge the lever 43 to the locked position. When the lever 43 is raised an edge 42 thereof presses on the cam member 36 and the collar 48 to rotate these against the action of the spring 50, but when the component 20 is pushed into engagement with the component 25 it rotates only the cam member 36 against the action of the spring 44.
