Abstract

A lubricant for application to metals before drawing comprises a metallic naphthenate made from a naphthenic acid having an acid value of at least 100. Plasticizers such as lanolin or chlorinated paraffin wax and fluidizers such as di octyl phthalate, or free naphthenic or oleic acid, or acid nonyl phosphate may be included. The lubricant may be applied direct if it is liquid: if it is solid it may be liquified by heat and the metal immersed therein, or it may be applied as a solution, dispersion or emulsion in water or trichlorethylene which may be at boiling point. When to be applied to a wire, the wire may be coiled and immersed in such solution &c. Suitable naphthenates are those of magnesium, barium, cobalt, chromium, zinc, zirconium, nickel and calcium, or mixtures thereof.
