Abstract

Discolouring impurities, especially iron, are removed from kaolin by treating a suspension of the kaolin in an acid, with a reducing agent, for example a dithionite, to dissolve at least some of the iron, and then contacting the suspension with a suitable ion exchange material, of particle size larger than the kaolin, after which the ion exchange material is first removed, and then the kaolin is filtered from the suspension. The ion exchange material may be removed by means of a screen, or it may be contained in liquid permeable bags or other containers, which are moved about in the suspension.
