Abstract
<PICT:0886212/III/1> In a process for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride free from magnesium oxide, a salt consisting mainly of magnesium chloride and containing 1 to 5% by weight of water and 2 to 6% by weight of magnesium oxide is continuously fed by a charging device 1 to a stirred bath 2 of molten magnesium chloride where it is melted and then passed through an overflow 5 to a tower 4 packed with carbonaceous material down which the melt trickles and is chlorinated by chlorine, phosgene, a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine, a chlorinated hydrocarbon vapour, or hydrogen chloride, introduced at inlet 9, the hydrogen chloride evolved by hydrolysis when the salt is melted entering the tower 4 with the melt and being used as additional chlorinating agent. Anhydrous magnesium chloride free of magnesium oxide is discharged continuously at outlet 7. The tower is heated by electrodes 10. The carbonaceous material may be coal or coke. Waste gases may be removed by gas outlet 12, the hydrogen chloride being recovered and mixed with chlorinating gases entering at 9, or the waste gases may be removed at outlet 8 whereby the melt is partially chlorinated by the hydrogen chloride in the upper part of the tower 4 and the chlorination completed in the lower part; in the latter case chlorinating gas is introduced at inlet 11. The process is carried out at 750 DEG to 900 DEG C. and the chlorinating gases are preheated. An apron 6 prevents unmelted material entering tower 4. In examples magnesium chloride containing water, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulphate, and sodium and potassium chlorides, is chlorinated.
