Abstract

A method of dehydrogenating titanium powder comprises (a) heating the powder under vacuum until hydrogen begins to be evolved, (b) allowing the pressure to rise to 400-600 m.m. Hg while increasing the temperature to 650-750 DEG C. (c) restoring a high vacuum and maintaining a temperature between 400 DEG C. and 750 DEG C. The pressure during (a) may be reduced to 10-2 m.m. Hg and at the same time the temperature may be raised to 400 DEG C. The pressure during (b) may be controlled by a throttle valve in the suction line to the vacuum pump and during (c) may be 10-3 m.m. Hg. The powder cakes or sinters during the treatment and after cooling to below 400 DEG C. in vacuo the cake may be ground to produce a hydrogen-free titanium powder of the same grain size as the starting material.
