Abstract

884,087. Forage harvesters. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. May 9, 1960 [Sept. 30, 1959], No. 16284/60. Class 6(3). In a harvester of the type comprising flails 73 pivotally mounted on a transverse, rotary shaft 11, the shaft 11 is removably mounted on the harvester frame. At one end, the shaft has welded to it an insert 21 integral with a stub shaft 23 which is mounted in a bearing 24 carried by a flange 25 which is bolted on a mounting plate 27 removably secured to the frame member 8. At the other, driven end, an insert 31 is welded to the shaft, this latter insert being integral with a bell housing 63 and being formed with a bore 36 for removably receiving a bearing 37 on the free end of a drive shaft 39. Thus by removing the mounting plate 27 from the frame member 8, shaft 11 may be withdrawn axially from the harvester frame. The shaft 39 is driven from a power take-off 65 through a gear box 40, and transmits a one-way drive to the shaft 11 by means of pawls 52 engaging ratchet teeth formed on the interior surface of the bell housing 63. Bearings 36 and 24, and the one-way pawl and ratchet system, allow free rotation of the shaft 11 when the latter is not positively driven.
