Abstract

884,006. Dissolving plutonium dioxide. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Jan. 29, 1960 [March 10, 1959], No. 3272/60. Class 39(4) Plutonium dioxide is dissolved in nitric acid in the presence of cerium as a catalyst. The cerium is added to the dissolving mixture in an amount of 0.001-0.02 molar, for example as cerms or ceric nitrate, or ammonium ceric nitrate. Boiling concentrated nitric acid may be used at a temperature of about 115‹C. A statement of prior art refers to promoting the dissolution by the addition of catalytic amounts of fluoride or stoichiometric amounts of oxidizing agents.
