Abstract
873,406. Welding by fusion. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 23, 1959 [July 17, 1958], No. 22946/58. Class 83 (4). Magnesium and magnesium alloys are arcwelded using an electrode supplied with alternating current and operating in a protective shield of argon containing 0.08 . . . 0.2% nitrogen. A tungsten electrode surrounded by a ceramic gas nozzle is used, and the gas is derived from two bottles containing argon (99.995% pure) and nitrogen, respectively. The process is applicable to the welding of end caps to nuclear reactor fuel element cans made of the magnesium alloy disclosed in Specification 776,649 and consisting of magnesium with 0.002 ... 1% beryllium, 0.25 ... 1.1 % aluminium and optionally 0.02 ... 0.44% calcium.
