873,025. Consuming smoke. WOODHEAD, R. G. Sept. 11, 1957, No. 17904/56. Class 126. A smoke consuming device for an open fireplace comprises a casing mounted at the rear of the fireplace and having two compartments, one for heating air and one for heating gas or other fuel, the heated air and gas being discharged over the fire to burn the smoke. Gas is supplied to an upper compartment of a box 1 fitted to the rear of a fireplace and air from outside the room is supplied to the lower compartment. Holes at the front of the casing distribute the gas and air to fumes rising from the fire to consume the smoke. A baffle 4 above the gas outlets is vertically adjustable. Pipes leading from the upper and lower parts of the box 1 supply gas and air to a burner at the front of the grate, comprising a gas supply tube 6 inside an air supply tube 5, Fig. 5, and the outer tube 5 is rotatable so that the flame can be directed to any part of the fire.
