Abstract
Molten silicon or ferro-silicon of more than 95% purity is purified by intimate contact with an oxygen-containing gas, optionally in the presence of a flux, e.g. an alkali metal salt. Titanium, iron, aluminium, calcium, and carbon may thereby be oxidised. The oxidised metal impurities may be removed as a surface slag. Purification may be effected by bubbling air or oxygen through the molten silicon from a graphite tube, or by directing a flame produced by burning oil in an excess of air into a vessel being filled with molten silicon from a production furnace (the Figure, not shown).
