Abstract

<PICT:0872205/III/1> Air containing fuel vapours, which is displaced from the fuel tanks of aircraft during refuelling, is forced by the pressure of the entering fuel through a conduit leading from the vent of a fuel tank into an enclosed bed of finely divided adsorbent and air free from fuel vapour is discharged therefrom. A suitable apparatus comprises a carriage (11) supporting at least one absorption chamber (17) having an inlet (28) and an outlet (24) and means to connect said inlet to the fuel tank vent. The adsorbent material may be regenerated after removal or whilst still in the vessel by passing superheated steam there-through. The numerals refer to the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, wherein two similar adsorbent chambers are provided, in which the beds are of cylindrical form. An axial outlet duct 26 is provided in each chamber and each bed is supported on a perforated plate 27 whereby the fuel-free air can reach said duct. The vapour-laden gas passes downwardly through the adsorbent, e.g. of activated carbon and since the absorption is accompanied by emission of heat, the degree of saturation of the bed may be determined by noting the vertical location of a hot zone. When the latter reaches the lower part of the bed a thermosensitive device 71 indicates that the bed is spent. The inlets of said beds are connected to a valve-controlled manifold so that the gases can be directed to the desired bed. A rotating spool (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) (see Group XXVIII) is provided on the base 11 to hold a length of flexible tubing for attachment to the fuel tank vent in such manner that it can be readily unwound for use and automatically rewound when refuelling is complete.
