Abstract
871,959. Laminates. MONTECATINI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E CHIMICA. Oct. 8, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956 (2)], No. 31461/57. Addition to 810,023. Class 140. Laminated materials comprise at least one layer of at least 70% crystalline high polymer of an alpha-olefin containing more than two carbon atoms, for example propylene or alphabutene, or a mixture of such olefins, combined with at least one layer of another material. Examples of other materials are cellulose acetobutyrate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, polyamides, a mixture of 85 parts of polyvinyl chloride with 15 parts of a copolymer of 60% butadiene and 40% acrytonitrile, a copolymer of 90% methylmethacrylate and 10% butyl acrylate, paper and fabrics. Two layers may be extruded downwardly through parallel slits and may be combined together, or with an intermediate preformed layer, by passage between heated or other pressure rolls, and individual layers, or the laminates, may be stretched by adjusting the speed of supply rolls or the final winding roll. Tubular layers formed by extrusion may be inserted one within the other, closed at their free ends and inflated, whilst being heated to within about 5‹ C. of the melting point of the layer most readily melted, to form tubular laminates. Alternatively the layers may be formed by simultaneous extrusion through coaxial annular nozzles and be held by pinch rolls and inflated during lamination to four times the extrusion diameter. The products are heatsealable and gas and vapour impermeable at temperatures up to 100‹ C.; they may be used for packing and wrapping goods and containers, may be made by blow and vacuum moulding into containers sterilizable by heat or, in the case of tubular sheet (which can normally be stored rolled up in flattened form), into small bags and containers, e.g. by cutting to length and sealing one end. Containers made from the laminates may be metallized by vacuum vapour deposition of aluminium or other metals.
