Abstract

871,912. Sonic inspection devices. CANADIAN PATENTS & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Sept. 10, 1959 [Oct. 3, 1958], No. 30962/59. Class 40(7) [Also in Groups XIX and XL(b) ] A sheet of material is tested for flaws by converting a part of the sound generated by rubbing a brush on its surface into an electric signal and indicating any difference between the amplitude of that signal after frequency-filtering and a predetermined amplitude. Panels 10 Fig. 1 of plywood are conveyed through the testing apparatus by rollers 11 . . . 14 and a brush 21 is rotated by motor 22 and is traversed across the panels. The brush is mounted in a housing having a cover 47 Fig. 3 lined with sound-absorbing felt 49 to insulate microphone 36 from external noise. The microphone output passes to a band-pass filter 39 centred on 8 kc./s. via a photo-electric switch 81. When the filter output departs from a predetermined level, due to the change in acoustic impedance of the panel portion encompassed by the brush by a flaw (e.g. between the plies), solenoid 41 causes plunger 42 to depress lead 46 which marks the plywood surface. To obviate relay 40 operation when the gap between panels reaches the brush housing a photo-cell 81 Fig. 6, to which is directed light from source 80, opens switch 81. To prevent the brush housing dropping between long gaps between panels, a roller 74 on arm 100 of a switch 70 is provided; the switch when operated energizes solenoid 71 the plunger 75 of which causes one end of carriage frame 20 of the brush housing to be forced upward. In another embodiment stationary brush and microphone units are employed each having the apparatus depicted in Fig. 3, Fig. 2 (not shown); in a modification each brush is fixed and reactangular in cross-section, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), a high panel feed speed being employed to ensure sufficient sound energy production.
