870,745. Casting processes. HOWE SOUND CO. Aug. 31, 1959 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 29631/59. Class 83 (1). In a method of making fine-grained castings, a nucleation catalyst is applied to the surface of a pattern so that on removing the pattern from the mould at least a portion of said catalyst is left on the mould surface. In particular examples, platinum is the catalyst when casting a refractory cobalt alloy containing nickel and chromium. In another example, when casting the same alloy, a wax pattern was coated with an aqueous sol of cobaltous hydroxide. After elimination of the wax pattern the cobaltous hydroxide is reduced to the more effective metallic form by introducing n-heptane into the hot mould. In further examples, the pattern was coated with a refractory dip coat containing cobaltic oxide which may or may not be subsequently reduced to metallic form by trichlorethylene. Part, only of the pattern may be coated with the catalyst, or catalysts of different, degrees of effectiveness may be used at different parts of the pattern to control differently the degree of nucleation of different parts of the castings.
