Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate polymers and copolymers (e.g. with ethyl and butyl acrylate), containing at least 50% of the vinyl ester, are made by polymerizing the monomers in aqueous dispersion in the presence of, as dispersing agent, 1/2 %-8% of amylopectin, calculated on the total dispersion and in the absence of more than 5% of amylose, calculated on the amylopectin content. The catalyst may be a salt of a peracid such as a perborate or persulphate, e.g. ammonium persulphate, and the monomer and catalyst may be added continuously during the polymerization, which may be carried out at increasing temperature as it proceeds. The aqueous polymer dispersions produced may also contain plasticizers, such as dibutyl phthalate, which may be added before or after the polymerization. Further amylopectin may be added, together with other ingredients, if the dispersion is to be used as an emulsion paint. The other ingredients may be rutile titanium dioxide, fine china clay or sodium o-phenyl phenate preservative. The compositions may be used for coating leather, paper and textiles and as decorative paints.
