Abstract

879,255. Fenders. LEWIS, E. M. Sept. 30, 1957 [June 28, 1956], No. 11542/61. Divided out of 876,341. Class 113. [Also in Group XXXIV] In a buffer device, (Group XXXIV) for receiving the impact of berthing ships at a quay 33, a torque tube 34 of mild steel or other material is mounted horizontally in a groove formed in the side of a concrete quay 33 and retained therein by a series of plates 36. The torque tube 34 has arms 37 welded thereto midway between the anchoring plate 36 such that excessive impact of a ship against rubber pads 38 mounted on arms 37 will be absorbed by causing the torque tube 34, to be torsionally strained beyond the elastic limit and thereby absorb the kinetic energy of impact by plastic deformation. A plurality of small parallel tubes or rods 35 are provided to permit torsional strain of the tube 34 but not inward bending strain..
