Abstract

Porous refractory material is obtained by feeding argillaceous or other refractory material as particles into contact with a gaseous medium in the hot zone of a furnace, agitating the particles and gas to cause the particles to impinge against each other and the surfaces of the furnace hot zone, burning the gas to produce a temperature high enough and for a time long enough to make the particles pyroplastic, thereby causing them to agglomerate together and on to the furnace surfaces until they accumulate to a size sufficient to overcome their adherence to the surfaces and so fall to a cooler zone of the furnace from whence they are removed. The agglomerates may then be crushed and sieved to size, a binder added e.g. unburned argillaceous material sulphite lye on core gum (a starch adhesive) together with water and the mixture moulded. Fireclay and sillimanite are specified, and the product can be used as lightweight aggregate for concrete.
