Abstract

A hardenable aqueous thermosetting resin is applied to at least the end surfaces of a newly-felled log, thus forming a protective coating on hardening. Resins specified include urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, melamine-urea-formaldehyde cocondensed resins and phenol-formaldehyde. The bark may be removed if desired, if it is intended to coat the length of the log as well as the ends. The resin may be applied by brushing or spraying. A hardener may be mixed with the resin prior to application or it may be applied after the resin: a third method comprises spraying the resin and hardener simultaneously from separate jets.
