Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0877840/IV (b)/1> in which R1 is a tertiary butyl or tertiary amyl group, R2, which may be the same as R1, is an isopropyl, tertiary butyl, tertiary amyl or cyclohexyl group and in which the benzene ring may be further substituted by one or more alkyl or alkenyl groups containing up to 6 carbon atoms, cyano groups, aralkyl groups and/or halogen atoms. The cyanates may be prepared by reacting a salt of the corresponding phenol with at least the theoretical amount of a cyanogen halide in the presence of an inert organic solvent. Examples describe the preparation of 2,6-di-tert. butyl phenyl cyanate, 2,6-di-tert. butyl-3-vinyl-, 4-cyano-, 4-methyl, 4-tert. butyl and 4-chloro-phenyl cyanate, 2 - iso - propyl - 6 - tert. butyl phenyl cyanate and 3,5,31,51-tetra-tert. butyl-diphenylmethane-4,41-dicyanate. 2,6 - di - tert. butyl phenyl carbamate is obtained from the cyanate by hydrolysis and converted to the N-dimethyl compound.
